River Watch: The Summer Report
Lines on the Water
As the July heat settles over Asheville, the Watauga and South Holston rivers of East TN remain our refreshing sanctuaries. Water temperatures are holding steady in the mid-fifties thanks to consistent generation schedules, providing optimal conditions for both the trout and the anglers pursuing them. We are seeing prolific sulphur hatches in the late afternoons, demanding technical presentations and a delicate touch.
Current Conditions

Watauga River
Strong morning nymphing followed by technical dry fly action as the shadows lengthen. BWO, Sulphur, and Caddis patterns are seeing great success in the riffles.

South Holston
The Sulphur hatch is the main event here. Ensure your fly box is stocked with adult patterns, split-cases, and various emerger stages for the afternoon rise.
